The asphalt surface on PD, which got
really beat up during the winter, is being
replaced and navigating that road is sort of like
travelling the Beltline with lane shifts and path
closures, etc. Most reliable route is from SW at
the confluence of all the trails taking the path
leading westerly to the access road along Verona
Road (near Saris) and then using the PD crossing at Verona Road.

On a related subject (or at least in the
immediate neighborhood), pending the completion
of the Cannonball to highway PD, does it still
work to ride out the SW path, turn right onto
PD, and ride the bike lane until the 18-151
intersection, and then head south on what I
think is then called the Military Ridge Trail? Â
Or is that blocked by the highway construction?

To be clear, there are two separate issues.
Â
The question about which side the spur back to
McKee Rd on the south side of the bridge should
be involved the two businesses. General Beverage
wants to build a roadway between the bridge and
their building, including parking cars up
against the west side of the bridge, so they
started a very contentious battle which is
having extremely negative impact on the other business.

The continuation of the path to the south is
purely General Beverageâs desire to have more
parking available and doesnât involve the
other business. So from the top of the bridge,
bikers will be looking down at vehicles parked
where the straight-line path should be, and the
path will have to go over and around wetlands to
get around them. Wetland permits have been a big holdup there. Â
Â
I donât know how expensive it will be to make
all those changes to cater to General Beverage,
but Iâm not happy for the taxpayers of Fitchburg.

Subject: [Bikies] Saga of the Highway PD bike bridge
Â
Work on the new Military Ridge
Trail/Cannonball Bike Path bridge over Highway
PD (McKee Road) in Fitchburg was held up due to
a dispute between adjacent landowners over
location of the south approach. Based on a
decision by the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation, the Fitchburg Planning
Commission recently approved a conditional use
permit for the project, but that generated a
threat of an appeal that would have further
delayed the project. That threat has now
vanished. Barring another unexpected
development, Fitchburg Mayor Shawn Pfaff says
the city now hopes the south end of the path can
be completed by September 22 and the north end
by October 20. Looks like we'll get to ride it this year after all.
