Vos has stated that he doesn't think public transportation is transportation. He thinks it is "public welfare" (his words). I'd guess that he doesn't think of bicycling as transporation either.

Maybe he should read his driver's manual.

In the conservative world, "public welfare" is tax money wasted on the wrong people. As opposed to, for example, road building, which is an investment.

Quoting Matthew Logan <[email protected]>:

There was a great group at the Capitol Today, and it was fairly well attended by the media as well. We had at least 5 reporters there from TV and radio.

Two hours after that conference was over, the Assembly Republicans met in the same room and unveiled their proposals for the next legislative session. During the Q & A, speaker Robin Vos answered questions about how he intended to balance the transportation budget. His answer basically boiled down to: transfer programs like mass transit, bicycling, and other non-automobile-centric transportation projects out of the segregated fund and into the general fund.

Keep in mind, the Republicans have also promised to hold the general fund spending level to the rate of inflation. That means there are major cuts coming, and mass transit and bicycling are now unprotected targets. If you were thinking that supporting the constitutional amendment to “protect” the transportation fund would mean more money for bicycling, you would have been mistaken.

Thought I would pass on the invitation below to anyone who might either be in the area tomorrow or would like to make a special trip to the Capitol in support of better transportation priorities.

I can't make it, but it sounds like they are going to have a good group.

Concerned Residents of Cities, Towns Traveling to Capitol to Tell Gov. Walker:

Stop Wasteful Highway Expansions, No New Transportation Taxes, Fix Local Roads First

WHAT: Last week, WISDOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb refused to hear community concerns over a proposed double-decker expansion of I-94 from 16th to 70th Streets and over the lack of state support for local road repair at a town hall meeting in Milwaukee. In response, dozens of Milwaukeeans are busing to the State Capitol tomorrow, and will be joined by residents of cities and towns fighting other highways expansions across Wisconsin, to call on Governor Walker to stop wasteful highway spending, and fix local roads and infrastructure instead. Community members are unhappy that the Governor is talking about new taxes, not the real transportation needs facing Milwaukee and communities statewide.
