“What about a tollway system? I haven't heard talk of that for a while. Is it a 
bad idea? Politically unfeasible?”



They key sticking point is that because Wisconsin signed on to receive Federal 
support for interstate construction, they are prohibited from charging tolls on 
those routes.

In the past I have heard there will be problems with traffic diversion when 
drivers choose routes to avoid the tolls.

Politically, Republican voters are in favor of tolls, while Democrats are 
slightly opposed.  The most recent crosstabs for the polling data can be found

The preferred solution as expressed by voters is to take money from other areas 
of the budget to fund transportation and road projects, at 44, 38, 38 % for 
R,D, and I respectively.



The second most preferred solution by voters is to increase taxes and fees at  
23, 32, 44 % for R, D, and I respectively.

The Governor’s current proposal to borrow is favored by 6, 6, and 6% of R, D, 
and I respectively.

Reducing construction and maintenance actually scores higher with voters at  
15, 8, and 13% for R, D, and I respectively.
