I suspect this is one of those questions where if you ask 10 different bicyclists you'll get 12 different answers. This makes sense because the positive/negative of the use of the sound signal likely depends on the specifics - amount of traffic, visibility, configuration of the road, time of day, etc. Personally - I find the sound signal useful and favor its continued use.
