The Marquette Neighborhood Association would like to make sure all cyclists are aware of the impending demolition of the former Tandem Press building on the block between Dickinson and Thornton going toward the Yahara River. Governor Walker's Department of Administration purchased the building and plan to demolish and put up a new building to house state archives. The concern is that even the nearest residents have not received any information on health and environmental safeguards for this demolition despite the fact that PCBs and asbestos are likely to be present in dust from the deconstruction. Information about what studies have been done, the low bar for what studies are required, and the resistance to share information combined with the DOA providing only a 5-day notice of the demolition mean the proposal is not being handled with consideration for the best interests of the neighborhood. We have no knowledge of whether the bike path will be closed and if there will be a safety concern to trail users from toxic dust or the length of time demolition may affect the trail. We want answers and we have sought the help of Senators Baldwin and Risser and Rep. Taylor, all of whom have been supportive in seeking more information and protections.
