If I have plans to stop at a store after work I simply bring my lock along. I am lucky to work downtown where I can schedule doctors appointments or errands during the day, and I can just bring it along. So I only run into problems if I schedule an appointment before work and forget to bring a lock from home.
Combined, my family of 4 probably has about around 12 bikes, 3 U-locks, and 1 cable lock. So, in addition to the U-lock I keep at work, we have 3 more locks at home that I can grab if I need to go to the store or other trips. For that reason, i's not convenient for us to keep our locks "tied" to a bike. Also, for a variety of reasons (step-thru bike frame, annoying jiggling noise, etc), I never liked using the U-lock bracket on my bikes. When I commute, I usually carry plenty of stuff in my panniers so I can just throw my U-lock into my panniers. But I don't need to...so I don't.
