The same happens with kmail stable using "TLS" and "PLAIN" instead of 
"LOGIN". After changing "PLAIN" to "LOGIN" again the bincimap-up 
process resumes normal operation (without consuming 99% of cpu).
For other login methods (e.g. CRAM-MD5) the server simply responds 
"... is not supported by the server".
