You are most likely using a Maildir++ depot (see your bincimap.conf file).  
This format doesn't support "root level" mailboxes. So yes, you need to
use a Sent folder under INBOX instead. A workaround (on some clients) is 
to have all users override the IMAP namespace and set it to INBOX/ in 
their clients. It might work.

The best solution is to use an IMAPdir depot instead of a Maildir++ one. 
IMAPdir is better in many ways; you can find docs about it if you google a 
bit. Converting from Maildir++ to IMAPdir has been a successful operation 
for several people on this list. I'm sure you can get valuable help if you 
decide to convert.

In 1.3, the NAMESPACE extension is supported, so this problem doesn't
exist anymore (in theory). But it's not a stable branch.
