Show me a better way.
In RedHat? I don't know of one.
Outside of RedHat? There are a plethora of better ways...

"better" is a very subjective term.
I would actually extend the comparison to be package-based vs. non-package-based systems.
Personally I find it useful to be able to determine which files belong to each application before and/or after installation, to be able to upgrade to a new version and regress if necessary, to see which applications are installed, etc.
I'm perfectly capable of installing from source, but I find packages give me more time to actually use my systems instead of administering them.
