You should read README.SSL. There are several articles on the web also
with good summaries - fex http://doc.trolltech.com/qq/qq10-sslfilter.html.  
Take away the stuff about QtSslSocket and you have a basic intro to SSL.

Short answer: No, others don't need your certificate, but if they don't
have it then SSL will only provide data encryption, and not protection
against man-in-the-middle attacks.
