Well, I'm going to install a bypass oil filter on my little truck, and I've been shopping around for synthetic oils to run it with. They all seem very good, but I do have some questions.
They all like to yell "I'M THE BEST!" as loudly as they can, and they all use shear strength, TBN, and flash point as ammunition with which to shoot at each other. Which of these would be the most important element to look at for a long drain interval oil for use with a bypass filter system? So far I've looked at Amsoil, http://www.amsoil.com/products/ame.html Shell Rotella T Synthetic, http://www.shell-lubricants.com/products/pdf/ROTELLA%20T%20SYNTHETIC.PDF Mobil Delvac 1, http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXE2CVLMOMobilDelvac1_5W-40.asp Royal Purple, http://www.royalpurple.com/rpmor/rpmor.shtml and Neo. http://www.neosyntheticoil.com/15w40.htm They all look good. Their flash points are all in the 470-490F range, and their TBN's are all in the 10-12 range. What I don't see on any of them are wear test results, like the 4 ball test, or something like that. There is _one_ study comparing Amsoil 5w30 with Mobil 1 5w30 in which Amsoil beat the pants off of the Mobil product, but these are not the heavy duty oils. http://www.1st-in-synthetics.com/letters2.htm Here's another showing Amsoil's performance in a "Sequence IIIF test". http://www.syntheticoildealer.com/sequence3.htm If anyone knows where I can find similar testing results on any other oils I'd appreciate it very much. I like the broad 5w40 viscosity range of the Rotella and Delvac, and the Rotella seems to be the easiest to obtain. Just to throw a little sticker into the mix, Amsoil has a deal with an oil analysis company for a price break for Amsoil customers. If you use Amsoil you get your analysis for $14 instead of $20.
