Dear Ontbirders,

Eleanor Beagan and I birded the Carden Alvar while going to and from the OFO Algonquin Park trip. The birds were easy to see because the vegetation is low and birds were vocal and displaying. Here are the highlights:

Today

A pair of Loggerhead Shrikes in the field on the west side of Wylie Road near Bluebird Box 10.

Upland Sandpipers, Brown Thrashers, Wilson's Snipes, Horned Larks, several pairs of Northern Harriers, Eastern Bluebirds, Vesper, Savannah, Field and Swamp along Wylie Road and County Road 35.

Sandhill Cranes on the west side of Wylie Road about 500 metres north of Sedge Wren Marsh.

Dark morph Rough-legged Hawk on Wylie Road north of Sedge Wren Marsh.

It was good to see lots of Tree Swallows after hearing that so many died in the recent cold spell.

Two active Osprey nests and a good selection of ducks on Canal Lake which still has some ice.

A pair of displaying Red-shouldered Hawks just north of Port Bolster.

Friday

One adult Peregrine Falcon on Rockview Road between Highway 48 and Eldon Station Road.

Two courting American Bitterns on County Road 45 near Norland.

Directions:

From Kirkfield on Highway 48 east of Lake Simcoe, proceed north on County Road 6. At 2.6 km past the Kirkfield Lift Lock, turn right (east) on McNamee Road where County Road 6 turns sharply to the left. Then turn left almost immediately on Wylie Road.

Note that you cannot take Alvar Road east from the "T" intersection at the north end of Wylie Road to County Road 35 because there is a washout. You can go left towards Lake Dalrymple or turn around and return on Wylie Road.
