Report for May 14, 2003 (Wednesday):

New migrants are limited today due to clear skies and relatively cool
temperatures overnight. Possibly the most migrants are to be found in the
north end of the Park, where many migrants were in full song including Scarlet
Tanager, American Redstart and a Pine Warbler at the extreme north end of
Lakeshore Road. But certainly the most exciting birds thus far today have been
found along South Point Trail, including Northern Mockingbird.

Seen today are the following hightlights:

A FISH CROW seen and heard at South Point Trail along the beach (Alan
Wormington, Sandy Dobbyn et al.)
-- the bird was traveling west and only seen once, but it obviously could
appear again in this area. Readers may be interested to know that this is
about the 12th record for Ontario, with the current bird only the second-ever
for the Rondeau Birding Area. But more remarkable is the fact that the species
has never been recorded in either Michigan or Ohio (!) so it remains a mystery
as to the source of these occurrences.

BLUE GROSBEAK – the female bird was again present at South Point Trail, at the
bench along the beach. The bird habitually feeds in the tall dune grasses.

LE CONTE’S SPARROW – one along South Point Trail, in a clearing along the first
sections of the trail starting via the end of Lakeshore Road.

The Mississippi Kite has not been reported since late afternoon yesterday (May
13) when seen in flight over Bennett Road (inside Rondeau Park).

The Lark Sparrow has not been reported since late yesterday, but might still be
present (the bird was along Lakeshore Road just south of the traffic circle, on
the east side of the road in the area of the Children’s Hut).
