OFNC BIRD STATUS MONDAY July 21 AT 10:30 AM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Another quiet week for bird reports.

Water levels on the Ottawa River as well as at the eastern sewage
lagoons remain high with virtually no habitat for shorebirds.

At Shirley's Bay on July 20, there was 1 Solitary Sandpiper and 2
Marsh Wrens. On the 20th, at the Casselman sewage lagoons there
were 18 Ruddy Ducks, a few Lesser Yellowlegs, Least and Spotted
Sandpipers and 1 Wilson's Phalarope. At the Embrun sewage lagoons
the same day, no shorebirds at all were found. However, the High
Falls Conservation Area in Casselman had great feeding habitat on
the 19th and there were over 50 Lesser Yellowlegs and at least 15
Least Sandpipers as well as 1 Killdeer, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 4
Spotted Sandpipers and 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper. Small numbers of
Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs were also seen at the Bruce Pit on
the 21st and at the pond at Earl Armstrong and High Rd on the 14th.

Back on the 13th, there were 8 to 10 Short-billed Dowitchers on a
pond on Moodie Dr south of the Trail Rd landfill but there have
been no subsequent reports.

Numerous swallows can now been seen gathering including Tree,
Northern Rough-winged, Cliff and Barn Swallows. Families of
Belted Kingfishers were noted on the 19th both at the Morris
Island Conservation Area and storm water pond in the south Ottawa
Business Park. Also on the 18th, along March Valley Rd at
Klondike Rd, a Black Tern was flying towards the Ottawa Duck Club
pond.

On the 15th in the Mer Bleue area there was a Green Heron and
Virginia Rail in the marsh and Clay-coloured Sparrow singing along
Ridge Rd and a Common Nighthawk was heard repeatedly in Rockcliffe
on the evening of the 14th.

Thank-you. Good birding.
