I was fortunate today (July 23) to be entertained by many singing avians as
I stood on the north platform at Cranberry Marsh in southwest Whitby. The
truly rejuventated marshlands have been homes for many waterfowl this
summer. Granted you may not see them, because of tall stands of herbs, but
you should be able to pick up close-in calling and singing by the likes of
VIRGINIA RAIL, AM.COOTS,MARSH WRENS,SWAMP SPARROWS,MOORHENS, etc.
There is a superb marsh along the barrier beach, 100m. east of the
water-control structure.

On the lake was a C.LOON; on the waterfront were--Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted
Sandpiper and Semipalmated Sandpiper.

Flying over the meadowlands just east of the marsh were 5 N.HARRIERS.

If any of you is interested in botanizing down there I would be happy to
meet you. Just suggest 1 or 2 times. The vegetation is much different fron
the past few years.
