Hello Ontbirders
Today, July 27th, I birded the east point of Amherst Island ( KFN
property). The shorebirding was very good with 14 species. Highlights
included 1 adult breeding plumaged Long-billed Dowitcher (calling)
which flew in with a breeding plumage Stilt Sandpiper and landed along
the shoreline, 2 adult Short-billed Dowitcher, 19 adult Sanderling in
various stages of moult, 3 juvenile Least Sandpiper, and 3 juv. Wilson's
Phalarope.
On the gravel bar were 19 Caspian Terns, 16 Great Black-backed Gull
and 3 Common Tern. A quick check in the "Owl Woods" produced zero owls
but a number of Eastern Towhee's were singing. A visit to Amherstview
Sewage Lagoon revealed 121 adult (moulting) Bonaparte's Gull and one
juv. Wilson's Phalarope. All cells had high water levels, with no
exposed mudflats.
                                                    good birding
                                                    Bruce
