Little Gulls at Port Burwell PP
The vast sandy beach at Port Burwell PP continues to impress. We searched
for the Hudsonian Godwit reported yesterday but it had moved on. Today
there were 10 Little Gulls (8 alternate plumaged adults and two 2nd year
birds - no hatching year birds) loafing on the beach with some 200
Bonaparte's Gulls (only 3 juveniles), Caspian Terns (1 juvenile), Common
Terns (no juveniles) and Forster's Terns (2 juveniles). Shorebirds
included 8 Sanderlings and 5 Semi-palmated Sandpipers.
Elsewhere in southeast Elgin County, we found our 3rd family of fledged
young Red-headed Woodpeckers in the last week.
Of interest to those who are or should be still be atlassing, the Acadian
Flycatcher Recovery Team (of which we are members and surveyors) has found
some 40 nests this year. Of these, 8 nests were still active with eggs or
recently hatched young as of August 1 and the predicted last fledgling date
is somewhere between August 15 and 20. Despite intensive searches
throughout the breeding season, a new nest and a new unmated singing male
were found just last week. There is still plenty of time to find or
confirm species if you are atlassing!!
Port Burwell PP is a the mouth of the Big Otter Creek on Lake Erie in
southeast Elgin County south of Tillsonburg on Hwy 19.
