Aug.4-evening at the Sobey's pool in southwest Whitby--Ron Pittaway reported 5 S-b Dowitchers
Aug.5 AM--the greatest excitement at Sobey's was the arrival of a huge perch across the beak of an adult Caspian Tern, the young tern screeching madly for it; BUT, not to be-- somehow the adult manoevred the fish to go headfirst into its mouth, then heavily(!!!) got up into the air to fly over our heads as if to say "nothing to it". In the pond-- several Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs, Semipal.,Least, Spotted and Pectoral Sandpipers and Semipal.Plovers. Cranberry has a large, glorious, difficult-to-get-to marsh at its south end--a number of us admired the following-- Green Heron, Wood Duck, Green-winged Teal, family of Moorhens, family of Coots, Kingfisher, Cedar Waxwings, Yellow Warblers, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and an adult Mute Swan with 2 young--one being the a "born-white" Royal, its sibling being the typical dirty grey. Doug Lockrey, Whitby PS--the Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch will likely start up as soon as someone reports 2 or more Ospreys on one day!!
