Hello Ontbirders
Over the weekend I birded a number of locations in eastern ontario
starting with Chaffeys Lock area early Saturday morning August 16.
Despite being the middle of the month there was still lots of activity
along Opinicon Rd. and opposite Skycroft Campground. Had two male
Cerulean Warblers and 3 male Golden-winged Warblers still occasionally
singing and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling infrequently. A number of
male Indigo Buntings were singing along the road. Later in the morning
birded the Prince Edward Point N.W.Area and found it somewhat quiet but
did see 7 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at the point. In a plowed field just
north of Smugglers Cove Campground along County Rd.13 I was somewhat
surprised to see 33 Caspian Terns resting in a field with a flock of
50+ Ring-billed Gulls.
On August 17 spent the day birding Presqu'ile Provincial Park. The
shorebirding was good between Owen Point Trail (formerly Beach 4) to
Owen Point with 15 species including 1 American Golden Plover, 4
Baird's Sandpiper, 1 Stilt Sandpiper and 2 Short-billed Dowitcher. On
various trails in the park found 10 species of warblers including
Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Black-throated Green, Blackburian and
Ovenbird. Between Owen Point and Gull Island a few diving ducks were
noted: 9 White-winged Scoter, 4 Common Goldeneye and 1 Greater Scaup.
Along the shoreline at Owen Point an immature Forster's Tern was
observed feeding.
good birding

Directions: Chaffeys Lock/Opinicon Road: Opinicon Road is north of
Kingston. From Hwy. 401 take county road 10 (exit 617) north towards
Westport for about 20 kilometres. Roughly 1 or 2 kms. past Perth Road
Village on the right is Opinicon Road. Turn right and drive towards
Chaffeys Lock making regular stops along the way to listen. Anywhere
along Opinicon Road is can be good. The old railway line or the Rideau
Trail
system opposite Skycroft Campgrounds are great for birding .
Prince Edward Point: Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area is
located by exiting at exit 566 south from highway 401 (between
Belleville and Napanee) and following
highway 49 to Picton. Then county roads 8 and 13 lead through Black
Creek
and around South Bay eastward into a peninsula. The Nat. Wildlife Area
is
found at the east end of the 10 km long peninsula.
Presqu'ile Provincial Park: Presqu'ile is located south of Brighton on
the north shore
of Lake Ontario. Take the Brighton exit from Hwy. 401 and travel south
on Hwy. 30 through the town and watch for the Park signs.
