This morning numerous observers gathered at Waverly Beach, which is marginally west of the Niagara River. Although it was first rather calm, very strong SW and W winds kicked in rather quickly.
A few members of the group observed a definite gadfly petrel (Pterodroma sp.) at a considerable distance, where any field marks were impossible. (Obviously Black-capped Petrel would be the most likely species.) Also seen was a single Parasitic Jaeger. I don't know what was seen after 11:30 a.m., when I left. So hurricane birds are still out there . . . based on many reports from around the Great Lakes, it appears that onshore winds (and a lot of patience) are your best bet.
