An Eared Grebe in basic plumage was diving close to shore among a group of
about 15 Horned Grebes off Lucas Point Park on the eastern edge of Cobourg
at midday today. It had the typical dark auriculars, slim all- dark bill,
and puffed up stern. Several Common Loons also in the area. This is a very
good vantage point for lake-watching and reliable for large numbers of loons
and grebes in migration.
Otherwise, few notable birds in the area, though it was a seven sparrow
morning (eight if you count House). White-crowned (many), White-throated,
Song, Swamp, Fox, American Tree, and one Lincoln's. Several American Pipits
and Snow Buntings were seen and heard in flight.
The cold north winds were pushing down a strong flight of Red-tails right to
the lakeshore, together with a few Sharpies and TVs. Cobourg harbour has
both scaup and an immature Ruddy Duck and there is still a flock of 30+ Surf
Scoters at the mouth of Cobourg Creek, west of the harbour.

To reach Lucas Point Park, exit Hwy.401 at Division Street, Exit 474, and
drive down Division to one block north of the harbour. Turn left at the
lights on King Street and drive east just less than 2km, past two more sets
of lights, to turn south on Willmott Street, where the houses end. This
street runs south to the lake then turns east with industry north of it and
the park to the south. After 200metres or so there is a small parking lot on
the south side with a walkway to the cliff edge which gives good views of
the lake.
