Ontbirders -
I'm posting this for Randy Horvath, Windsor, who
is without access to a computer. Observed today Oct 27
was a Western Sandpiper at Hillman Marsh Conservation Area
in Essex Co, specifically in the baited area beyond the
visitors centre there. This would be a late sighting for this
species. This co-operative individual bird was studied in
detail from a distance of less than 20 feet. A variety of other
shorebirds are still at Hillman and Sturgeon Creek including
Dunlin, Lesser Yellowlegs, and Common Snipe. Tom Hurst
reports the Glossy Ibis was still at the same Wheatley
pumphouse location today, where its been for the past week.
While hiking the Rondeau Provincial Park barrier beach peninsula
on Oct 20 last week I retrieved a (dead) Double-Crested Cormorant
with a bright red leg band and a standard USFWS band.
The USFWS banding lab reports that it was banded as a
nestling this year at Spider Island in the Green Bay, Wisconsin area.
On the Sturgeon Creek mudflats this week-end Oct 25 & 26 in
amongst dozens of Canada Geese were 7 neck-collared
individuals with bright orange neck bands. I'm awaiting a report
from the CWS Bird Banding Office on their origin.
Hillman Marsh is on the east side of the Point Pelee peninsula
7 km north of Point Pelee Nat'l Park, while Sturgeon Creek is
on the west side of the Point Pelee peninsula 4 km north of PPNP.
Good birding -
