Hello Ontbirders

Bruce Di Labio and I spent 3 hours this morning birding Presqu'ile Bay
along Bayshore Rd (the cottage road on Presqu'ile), plus a quick check
of the islands from Owen Pt. Duck numbers and diversity (15 spp) are
really starting to kick in with most birds seen from the Customs Dock.

157 Mute Swan
130 C Goose
2 Am Black Duck
7 Mallard
8 Gadwall
2 Am Wigeon
225 Redhead
2 Canvasback
3400 Gr Scaup
25 Ww Scoter (including a flock of 22)
1375 Long-t Duck
470 Com Goldeneye
58 Bufflehead
35 Com Merganser
2 Rb Merganser
2 adult Bald Eagle (one chasing ducks in the Bay and one sitting in a
large dead oak on the right side of High Bluff Island, as seen from Owen
Pt.)
1 female N Harrier on Gull Island
1 light morph Rougl-legged Hawk - flew in over Presqu'ile Bay and landed
on a small chunk of floating ice off Salt Pt.
1 N Flicker
1 1st winter Glaucous Gull
820 Ring-billed Gull - all immaculate birds near Gull Island - a major
nesting site
330 Herring Gull - including some singles and pairs standing at
traditional nest sites on Gull Island
15 GBb Gull

While walking along Bayshore Road we also heard several Gc Kinglets away
from where they have been wintering, plus a few Horned Larks overhead as
well. Also of interest was a Coyote sitting on packed, floating ice
about 200 m offshore from Beach 4. It may be searching for ducks that
get trapped by floating ice?

Presqu'ile is best reached by taking the Brighton exit and following the
signs through town for the park.

Cheers,

Bruce and Doug
