Hi All
Just a quick update on the owl situation. There are still Long-eared Owls
being seen along Concession E, just north of Point Pelee National Park.
The numbers have decreased as the week went on - we had five out there this
afternoon. However, in speaking to some of the birders that have gone
looking, some have driven the dike road and not seen any owls and returned
an hour or two later and found them. This suggests that they are moving
around during the day (likely scared up by some of the other birds of prey
which appear to have been hunting them), so trying more than once is key.
I have also found that driving the dike road from east to west resulted in
better viewing opportunities (you also don't have to drive right along the
edge of the ditch!).
It's been a little quieter in the park this week around the feeder, but we
are hearing much more song. Our Towhee has not been seen at the feeder,
though there have been reports along the roadway just north of the Visitor
centre. I found some Tundra Swans in the field just east of the Leamington
Airport this afternoon and there are waterfowl moving around much more
today. I also had a Peregrine Falcon go by my house (near the Leamington
Marina) this morning.
Good birding - spring is definitely in the air down here!
