Another good day for a walk out on the spit starting of with 55+ swifts flying over head also seen 700+ starlings and a Monk Parakeet flying with them ( I know it isn't a wild one and I hope it heads south with them ) 2 Black B Cuckoo 1 Great Egret (al though the nest was empty) and the best being a Female Canvasback with 4 fresh checks which is a great nesting record for the spit .. Also 12 species of Butterflies (1 Snout being the best) 1 Coyote, 1 dead Beaver and 13 patted tortillas Tommy Thompson Park l can be found at the end of Leslie St south of the lake shore on the east side of Toronto. In the late afternoon of Aug.14 Rayfield Pye conducted an excellent outing to inform 8 visitors of the successful regeneration programme presently underway at Cranberry Marsh in southwest Whitby. While there we were witness to 4 "local" Red-tailed Hawks, 3 Marsh Harriers and a Sharp-shinned Hawk which insisted on chasing a juvenile Broad-winged Hawk out of the area.. To my knowledge that would be the first BWH noted this "fall". On the wetlands we observed 1 Black-crowned Night Heron, 3 Great Blue Herons, an adult Moorhen, several Marsh Wrens and Hummingbirds, many E.Kingbirds. The Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch will be underway as soon as I and my cohorts decide that a few migrants are coming through-- certainly before Saturday, Aug.28.
