Hi Ontbirders,

Today in the drizzle in Guelph, I found at least two
RED CROSSBILLS in Mayfield Park. They were in and out
of the big spruces at the south end of the park. Also
in the area were many PINE SISKINS... maybe there's
hope for a good winter finch year down south!

Directions:
Take exit 299 off the 401 and travel north (this
becomes Gordon St.). Just before the university in the
southern part of Guelph, turn east (right) on Stone
Rd. Less than 1 km east of Gordon, turn south (right)
onto Colborne St, then immediately east (left) into a
dead end at Mayfield Park.

Good birding,

David Geale

Sandhill cranes are being observed fairly often in open fields and =
harvested cornfields as they migrate through the area. Rough-legged =
Hawks are back and there has been a beautiful dark-phase along County =
Road 3 south of Burgoyne for several days. Immature Shrikes have been =
noted in several locations this weekend - County Road 3 at Burgoyne, =
hwy. 6 at Ferndale, hwy 21 east of Southampton.
Occasional shorebirds are still being found along the lake and numbers =
of ducks are increasing. Northern Saw-whet Owls are migrating and can =
sometimes be observed right at dusk along forested areas.

Hi All,

A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO is frequenting the Pembroke waterfont. It has been
seen for almost a week and seems content. Two 1st winter GREAT
BLACK-BACKED GULLS were on the sand flat at the mouth of the Muskrat River
beside the marina, also. Also, yesterday, in the pine forests along the
Madawaska River, Centenial Lake and Black Donald Lake were large numbers of
Red-breasted Nuthatchs in mixed flocks with chickadees, kinglets and
creepers. I've never seen the numbers of RBNU's moving through.

For the YBCU, from the band shell and Pointer Boat at the marina in
downtown Pembroke, walk along the Kiwanas Walkway past the outdoor chapel.
Between there and the next 100 metres stand back and wait for movement.
The cuckoo has been staying between the path and the Ottawa River, often
alighting on the path to pick up insects.

Good luck and wear you binoculars at all times.
