What a day!!! From dawn to dusk on Nov.7 a great many people travelled down Hall's Rd. in Whitby to witness the 1st yr. GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW --indeed, every 10-15 minutes this bird arrived to feed with several other sparrow species on the feed supplied daily by Karl Jennewein. This bird was first reported by John Floegl in the afternoon of Nov.6, then identified, confirmed and photographed by John and Mike McEvoy. The visitors had great vantage points and patience.
A point of interest-- it was Nov.6 of last year that our first Cave Swallow was noted!! Other birds-- 1 N.Shrike, several Pine Siskins, 2 Fox Sparrows. THE BARRED OWL OF NOV.3 WAS FOUND DEAD ON THE BEACH. Raptors have been "hanging around " for the past 2 days. Finally they started to move westward-- 4 Sharp-shinned, 1 Cooper's, 2 N.GOSHAWK, 1 molting male N.Harrier, 21 Red-tailed, 9 Rough-legged, 1 UR. The total Rough-legged count is now 217, 5 short of the 1991 record of 222. Exit 401 at Salem, south to Bayly, east through LakeRidge to the first street--Hall's Rd.--south to the second roadside parking area.
