Shortly after 0700 this morning, Monday November 22nd, the Selasphorus
hummingbird was observed feeding at the Haines backyard feeders. Yesterday
after a 5 hour drive, two birders from Ohio enjoyed watching the hummer for a
good part of the afternoon. On Saturday, Diego Garcia-Bellido and his wife
Ibella from Madrid Spain, visiting friends in Toronto where they heard about
Janice's bird, wasted little time in driving to the Falls to observe the
hummingbird. I understand they went for the bird FIRST....then the visit to
the gorge!!

Directions:
Take the QEW to the Thorold Stone Road exit in Niagara Falls. Now turn left
(east) to Dorchester Road, then right (south) one block to Pettit Avenue. Take
a left here and continue for about 1/2 km to Sherwood Road (directly across
from First Baptist Church on the right hand side). Turn left and proceed one
block to Peach Avenue to 4579, the second or third house on your right.

OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - NOV 21 2004 AT 7:30 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

A somewhat lean week for bird reports, but with two definite
highlights!

An adult ROSS' GOOSE was discovered at around 11:15 AM today (Nov.
21st) with a flock of approx. 130 Snow Geese at a pond in a farm
field south of Reid's Mills. This is on the east side of
Stagecoach Rd, which becomes Regional Road #1 at Reid's Mills.
The pond is on the east side, between property #s 1215 and 1255.
The ROSS' GOOSE was still present at 4:00 PM.

A TUFTED TITMOUSE has been coming to a feeder in Hallville, south
of Ottawa, for the past 3 weeks. It has evidently been visiting
regularly and was most recently seen at 4:00 PM on the 21st.
Please call the Rare Bird Alert Line (option #1 on the Bird Status
Line) for detailed directions and instructions for viewing this
bird.

In the Constance Bay area, there were 2 juvenile Red-throated
Loons along with 5 Common Loons on the 16th, and the 3 Red-headed
Woodpeckers continue to persist at the old burn site off Whistler
Rd, most recently reported on the 20th.

The SUMMER TANAGER at 51 Starwood Rd. has not been reported since
the 14th. Any information regarding its continued presence would
be appreciated.

Waterfowl sightings (other than the ROSS' GOOSE) were for the most
part unremarkable in terms of diversity, but several Snow Geese
are still around, including the flock on Stagecoach Rd. and
approx. 165 still at the large pond on Moodie Dr. south of the
Trail Rd. Landfill on the 21st. Multiple 1000's of Canada Geese
continue to stage on the Ottawa River and a group of 9 Cackling
Geese were seen from Andrew Haydon Park near the mouth of Graham
Creek on the 15th. A few Ring-necked Ducks, Greater and Lesser
Scaup, 3 White-winged Scoters and a late Ruddy Duck were present
at the Moodie Dr. pond on the 21st, and a male Barrow's Goldeneye
was on the Rideau River between Strathcona Park and the Rideau
Tennis Club on the 16th.

At the Winchester sewage lagoons on the 14th there were 9 very
late Bonaparte's Gulls, 1 American Coot, and 1 Dunlin. Among the
predominantly Herring Gulls in the fields along Barnsdale Rd. and
Moodie Dr. on the 21st, there was one adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull and 1 immature Glaucous Gull.

The 1st Snowy Owl of the season was reported on the 21st, from
Concession 20 northwest of St-Isidore east of Ottawa. Two Short-
eared Owls were seen on Earl Armstrong Rd. at the "S"-curve west
of Bowesville Rd. shortly before 5:00 PM on the 21st, and a female
Black-backed Woodpecker was found in a Tamarack plantation along
County Rd. 8 north of Clarence-Cambridge Rd., also on the 21st.

A group of 5 Bohemian Waxwings were at Britannia on the 20th, and
several finch species continue to move through the Ottawa area
including Pine Grosbeak, Common Redpoll and Pine Siskin, and the
first local report of a Red Crossbill came from the Torbolton
Forest in Constance Bay on the 16th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
