A successful outing today for the 21 birders present. 11 Pine
Grosbeaks on Northey Road prior to our fairly unproductive walk into
Petroglyphs Park, where Bald Eagle, 6 Red-br.,1 White-br. Nuthatch, 2
Hairy Woodpeckers, Golden-crowned Kinglet, 3 Rock Pigeons (honest !)
were all of note.
On our drive along Co. Rd. #6 to Lakefield, we found a Great Gray
Owl near Stoney Lake, 15 Evening Grosbeaks, two groups of Redpolls, a
N Shrike and a flock of Snow Buntings.
After a coffee stop in Lakefield, a mixed flock of 50 Bohemian and
Cedar Waxwings were well seen at Bridge Street and Caroline near the
Otonabee River. Several birders then headed south to Port Hope and
were successful in seeing the Hawk Owl. The rest birded Division Road
and Co. Rd. #4 back to Peterborough through Duoro. A Pileated
Woodpecker, 50 Bohemian Waxwings, and 5 Great Gray Owls were the
highlights.
Yesterday there was a GGO at the Peterboro' Airport and a Barred
Owl at the west end of the village of Cavan.

The Hawk Owl was easily seen at the location as advertised (and reported =
earlier by Dave Milsom) sitting on the wires on the south side of Hwy 2. =
This bird was seen around 10:30 am.
Also seen well was the Harris's Sparrow on Kellogs Road east of the =
green gate in the brush pile. A scope would be my recommendation to find =
this bird. It was with a small group of White-throated and Tree Sparrows =
along with a few Juncos. Spishing will get the birds to sit high within =
that brush pile. Also seen here were 2 female Purple Finches high up in =
the poplars 75 or so feet north of that brush pile.=20
A quick trip to the Holland Marsh area also resulted in finding 2 Great =
Gray Owls on Keele St within a km or so north of Hwy 9. Look for both =
these birds on the east side of Keele. Both were actively hunting and =
seemed healthy. Keele Street runs north off Hwy 9 west of Newmarket but =
east of the 400.
Directions
For Harris' Sparrow:
Exit 461 off 401 and go north 1 Km to the flashing red light. Turn =
left=20
(west) here onto Hwy. 2 and go about 1 Km to Kellogs Road and turn right =
(north). Go about 3.5 Km past 4th Line and Massey Road until you come to =
a=20
green gate on your right with a "No Trespassing" sign on it. Park here =
well=20
off to the side. The brush pile is about 100 feet directly east of the =
green gate.
For Northern Hawk Owl:
The Owl was perched on the hydro wires just west of Kellogs Road =
on Hwy # 2
