Hi Everyone
Today Mary Schuster and I went down to look at the large flock of gulls on
the ice off of Liverpool Road. (Frenchman's Bay, I think). We had 7 gull
species including GLAUCOUS, ICELAND, THAYER'S and LESSER BLACK-BACKED. This
large group of gulls is not far off shore and afford fabulous scope views.
Directions:
From 401 eastbound exit at White's Road, go south to Bayly and turn left.
Turn right on Liverpool Road and turn right on Annland and follow it around
to the parking lot at the park.
From 401 westbound exit at Liverpool and go south then continue as above.

There are still lots of gulls on the river. The area above the falls was
very impressive today and Goat Island early in the morning had lots of
roosting and feeding birds close in. Five Lesser Black-backeds, one
first-winter Glaucous, and 3 Iceland Gulls were seen from Goat Island, as
was a possible Herring X Lesser Black-backed Gull. Two more first-winter
Glaucous Gulls were seen from the Ontario side - one above the control gates
and one below.
At Lewiston-Queenston we had two adult Little Gulls among the still numerous
Bonaparte's. At the power plants from the Adam Beck overlook we had an
estimated 20+ Iceland Gulls, and our fourth first-winter Glaucous Gull of
the day. From the small north overlook at Adam Beck we had a probable adult
CALIFORNIA GULL. The California Gull that was regular through November and
the fIrst half of December had not been reported in about three weeks so we
were pleasantly surprised. Everything looked good (size, mantle darkness,
bill markings, head streaking, lots of black in wingtips with two large
mirrors) but we were unable to see the color of the legs or feet as he was
actively feeding in dull light.
On the trip home we had 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 2-3 Rough-legged Hawks, and 2-3
No. Harriers over the large field at the northeast corner of Dickersonville
and Youngstown-Wilson Roads in the Town of Porter in Niagara County.
