Just when you think the main migration of passerines has passed, a 2-1/2 hr-sweep late this morning of Colonel Samuel Smith Park this morning netted 21 species of warbler, none in large numbers as has been the pattern everywhere this spring. The 'bowl' , the tree-ringed oval of trees located in the ne corner of the park, and grove of mixed trees just across the road to se were swarming with Swainson's thrushs. Warbler highlights consisted of Mourning (1m), Cape May (1m), Northern Parula (2-m&f) and Canada (at least six males). The heavy underbrush under the line of spruce on the east edge of the 'great lawn' provide me with glimpses of a male Connecticut Warbler and a White-eyed Vireo. The creek that flows into the marsh complex east of the power plant had a Louisiana Waterthrush (singing) and an Olive-sided Flycather. There were two Scarlet Tangers and one Yellow-bellied Flycatcher feeding in the willows south of bowl.
Directions: The park is located along the shore of Lake Ontario in sw Toronto ... and is located at the end of the road which is a continuation of Kipling Avenue (mid-way between Brown's Line and Islington) ... of these, only Islington can be accessed off the QEW. After crossing Lakeshore proceed south jogging slightly west then south around the old power plant; park at the parking lot at the end of the road and take the path that runs directly south off the cul-de-sac.
