The current status of the Red-necked Grebes nests in Bronte are as follows:
The nest in the pond in Bronte marsh, north of Lakeshore Rd., is abandoned
and there are no grebes in the area. Eggs are still visible. My best guess
is that a fall in water level made access to the nest difficult or
impossible. There was a family of Wood Ducks in the pond this morning.
The eastern nest in Bronte Outer Harbour Marina has one fresh looking egg
but was unattended this morning. The bird that hatched prior to June 12 is
still easily seen in the area and is now diving occasionally.
The western nest in the marina is abandoned.
The Cliff Swallows nesting under the eaves of the Lighthouse Restaurant have
had a good year (unlike last year) with many hungry beaks visible in the
nest entrances.
Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Rd. (Oakville) and go south to Ontario
Street where Bronte Rd. ends. Turn left, the marina and restaurant is on
your right. Bronte marsh is just north of the Lakeshore Rd. bridge. The
pond is on the west side of the creek.
