Hi Everyone
Today, April 5th birded the flood plains east of Ottawa. Overall there was still lots of activity despite the reduced water levels. Along Milton Road near Carlsbad Springs there were still a few 1000 Canada Geese along with 4 Tundra Swans and a few 100 Northern Pintails. In the Bourget-Pendleton-Riceville area it was fairly quiet and the water levels were low but again and a few 1000 Canada Geese and 15 Snow Geese were in the limited standing pools of water. After checking a number of fields we finally hit a nice concentration of Snow geese near Ste. Rose. In the area there were approximately 5000-7500 Greater Snow Geese, 46 Blue morph and 2 Ross's Geese. The geese were very wary and numerous flocks took off heading east. This all took place between 10:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Directions: Carlsbad Springs/Bear Brook: Take Hwy 417 east from Ottawa to exit 96
(Carlsbad Springs), go north to Cty rd. #26 (Russell Rd.), then north on #85
(Milton Rd.)
To get to Cobbs Lake from Ottawa, travel east on Highway 417
to Boundary Road (exit #96) and turn left (north) toward Carlsbad
Springs. At the "T" junction of Boundary Road and Russell Road (Route
26), turn right (east) on Russell and continue until you come to Bourget
(approximately 25 km). In Bourget, there is a 4-way stop sign. Go
straight and, a couple of km further along, the road goes through a
spring flood plain; this is the Cobbs Lake Creek area.
Riceville area can be located by traveling east of Ottawa on Hwy.
417 to exit 51, (St.Isidore) and follow CR 9 north to the Riceville
flood plains.

Ross's Geese: From Hwy 417 east of Casselman take exit 58 and proceed north
on Cty Rd.8 for about 1km until you come to Concession 20 in the middle of
the long curve. Turn right (east) on Concession 20. Follow Cons. 20 passed Ste.rose Rd. and check the fields on both side of the road.

An Eastern Ontario MAPART Map is very helpful.
