Yesterday (around noon) my wife and I visited the Carden area. About 200 feet up the road from the southern end of Wylie Road, just after the first bank of trees we spotted a singing Henslows Sparrow. On the west side of the road. (When I first heard it, I thought it was a Least Flycatcher with a sore throat!). Had great views through binoculars and scope. It was still singing when we came out of the area two hours later, but we could not see it.
Wylie Road is north of Kirkfield in Victoria County and Kirkfield itself is on County Road 48 east of Highway 12 and well north of Whitby and about 130 km from Toronto if you follow the roads and not a Crow. IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE ONTARIO BIRD RECORDS COMMITTEE (OBRC): In March the OBRC concluded its operations for 2005. During the year about 120 submissions were processed, and the results will soon be published in the August issue of Ontario Birds in the form of the OBRC Annual Report. Although 120 or so reports were submitted during 2005, many more unfortunately did not reach the committee. At the end of this message is a list of reported rare birds in 2005 for which the OBRC has not received any documentation. We have organized these records by region, to easily illustrate what undocumented observations have occurred in each area. If any reader has photographs and/or written descriptions for any of these listed rarities, the OBRC would certainly appreciate the submission of a formal Rare Bird Report. At this late date, however, we would suggest that observations not be documented based on memory, but instead on existing written descriptions, field notes and/or photographs. The list of reported rarities in 2005 for which the OBRC has not received any documentation is rather extensive - in excess of 100 records. It is truly unfortunate that these significant sightings could not be included in the upcoming Annual Report. Among those species listed, one is a potential first record for Ontario (Barnacle Goose), while another is a potential third record for the province (Anhinga). However, any and all of these can be included in a subsequent Annual Report pending ratification by the OBRC. We continue to stress the importance of fully documenting the occurrence of rare birds in Ontario. A post to ONTBIRDS or publication in North American Birds does not constitute documentation, and certainly not so in the eyes of a future researcher who will have no way of assessing a particular observation in 25, 50 or 100 years from now. In addition to reviewing and publishing rare occurrences, the OBRC also archives all received material at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto; this material will continue to be of great value to future researchers. Additional information on the OBRC can be found on the web site of the Ontario Field Ornithologists' at www.ofo.ca/obrc. Here you can also find information on how to document a rare bird, the Review Lists (species the OBRC reviews) for both northern and southern Ontario, and online reporting forms (if required). Questions regarding any rarity listed below should be directed to Ian Richards. Rare Bird Reports can be sent directly to Bill Crins (OBRC Secretary), either by e-mail or regular mail. Thank you very much for your continued interest in documenting Ontario's rare avifauna.
