On Thursday July 6th, 2006, this is the HNC Birding Report:
Great Blue Heron Peregrine Falcon Sora Least Sandpiper Greater Yellowlegs Lesser Yellowlegs Least Sandpiper Common Tern Yellow-billed Cuckoo Pileasted Woodpecker Cedar Waxwing Scarlet Tanager Rose-breasted Grosbeak Baltimore Oriole Sightings are a little bleak this week with the height of nesting season upon us. Returning shorebirds seem to be about. At the Grimsby Sewage Lagoons today a Least Sandpiper was seen and a Sora was heard. Common Terns seem to be nesting on one of the islands out in the far north lagoon. Today at the stormwater ponds at North Service Road and Guelph Line six Lesser Yellowlegs, a Greater Yellowlegs and a Great Blue Heron were present. At Borer's Falls Conservation Area a juvenile Yellow-billed Cuckoo was seen tonight along with family groups of Scarlet Tanager, Baltimore Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Cedar Waxwing. A birder in Dundas near University Plaza was pleasantly surprised this week by two Pileated Woodpeckers present at Lions Lane. Our Peregrine Falcons are doing extremely well and getting the hang of chasing prey around downtown Hamilton going after a Mallard Duck a couple of days ago. The camera on top of the Sheraton remains blank as all three Peregrines are moving about downtown and seem to be past the shaky point. Its nice to see another successful nesting season here at the Sheraton. Keep me posted of sightings of these birds if you see them. That's the news for the week. I'll rest my typing fingers for busier times ahead. Have a great week. Good birding, Cheryl Edgecombe HNC Hotline 905-381-0329
