We found a White-winged Crossbill with a flock of locally breeding warblers
on Alvar Rd half way between Wylie Rd and Lake Dalrymple Rd at about 3 p.m.
yesterday. The warblers were Black-throated Green, White-rumped, Nashville
and Chestnut-sided. This is a very rare occurrence in this area during
August.

At 7 p.m. we were driving south on Kirkfield Rd to the curve were it turns
into Centennial Park Rd when we spotted a loose flock of 29 Common
Nighthawks. We watched for about ten minutes as they swooped and swirled
marvelously, but we never heard a single call.

At 8:15 p.m. 4 more nighthawks were seen and heard while flying. We were on
Victoria Rd just south of Alvar Rd.

The first Whip-poor-will was heard at 9 p.m. on Alvar Rd. about a mile west
of Victoria Rd. Three Woodcock were flushed at the low spot were there is a
washout across the road. A regular car will scrap getting through this
spot. As we proceeded west to Wylie Rd. 6 more Whip-poor-wills were heard.
By 9:15 p.m. to our surprise they ceased calling altogether. The show was
over.

Directions: The Carden area and roads referred to are accessed by driving
north from Kirkfield about 7 km (through the lift lock) to the left turn in
the road. Take a right from the bend and an immediate left onto Wylie Rd.
The area is well presented in the Ontario Road Atlas page 43.
