Migrants at Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve, Tueday, August 22

At dawn there were numerous warblers feeding in spruce and cedar hedges along
the lake. Species noted included Black-throated Blue, Chestnut-sided,
Magnolia, Black-and-white, Nashville, Black-throated Green, Yellow-rumped,
Tennessee and American Redstart. Also present was a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, several Eastern Wood-pewees and a Great-crested
Flycatcher.
Several thousand monarch butterflies roosted in the woods for most of the
day. They tend to favour the sheltered areas in the middle of the woods.
With the change in wind direction and cooler temperatures I expect migrant
numbers to increase tomorrow. The monarchs will begin to stir around 8:00
a.m., and most may have moved out of the woods by mid-morning. In late
afternoon/early evening monarch numbers will likely build again as they gather
to roost for the night.
Directions to Thickson's Woods
Exit from #401 to Thickson Rd. S. Continue south about 1.5 kilometres to the
Waterfront Trail, where you will see a large green sign on your left that says
"Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve". Park along the east side of Thickson Road
and walk east along the Waterfront Trail about 200 metres to where a pathway
enters the woods on your right. Trails lead through the woods with two
extending to the roadway on the south side of the woods along the shore of Lake
Ontario.
The entrance to the meadow portion of the reserve is on the north side of
the Waterfront Trail opposite the entrance to the woods.

While birding with Tony Beck's group just before noon today we observed a
Great Egret and a Lesser Black-backed Gull at the ponds on Moodie Drive.
At the same location we saw an un-banded Juvenile Peregrine Falcon land on
the shore and begin to devour a deceased duck. Almost immediately ten
Pied-billed Grebes came up to the shoreline in what appeared to be a form of
mobbing behaviour. Earlier in the morning we observed 10 species of warblers
including a Wilson's along the Jack Pine Trail off Moodie Drive.
(Directions courtesy of NeilyWorld)
Directions to Moodie Drive Ponds: From Highway 416 take exit 66
(Fallowfield Road). If southbound, a 0.4 km offramp dumps onto Fallowfield,
where you will turn right or west. If northbound, the 0.4 km offramp brings
you to Fallowfield, where you will turn left or west onto it and in 0.5 km
join the southbound offramp traffic. Both groups will now follow Fallowfield
Road west for an additional 0.4 km to reach Moodie Drive. Turn left or
southeast onto Moodie Drive and go 5.3 km, passing Cambrian Road to reach
the quarries (second gate on the left). Park along the side of the road
without blocking the access.
Directions to Jack Pine Trail: From Highway 416 take exit 72 (West Hunt
Club Road). If southbound, a 0.4 km offramp dumps onto West Hunt Club Road,
where you will turn right or southwest. If northbound, the 0.2 km offramp
brings you to Cedarview Road, where you will turn right or SSE onto it and
in 0.2 km come to West Hunt Club Road. Turn right or southwest onto it and
in 0.4 km join the southbound traffic. Both groups will now follow West Hunt
Club southwest for an additional 2.1 km to reach Moodie Drive. Turn left or
SSE onto it and drive 1.4 km to reach a parking area on the left for the
Jack Pine Trail.
