Highlights of reports received August 17 through August 24 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include SANDHILL CRANES, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE,
WILLET and TRICOLORED HERON.
Near the western limit of the BOS study area, August 23, along the
Grande River on the Niagara Penisula of Ontario, a pair of SANDHILL
CRANES with one immature crane were confirmed along River Road, west
of South Cayuga Road in the Town of Dunnville. The cranes, which were
said to have been breeding at this location for several years, are on
private property, but may be seen from River Road, in a field marked
by a white barn with a red roof. This may be the anticipated first
breeding record of SANDHILL CRANES in the BOS region.
Also in Ontario, at least 16 shorebird species were reported this
week from the north shore of Lake Erie. A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was the
highlight of the BOS Shorebird Count on August 20, at Point Abino in
Fort Erie. Other shorebird highlights - in Dunnville, over 100
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS on Poth Road, two
more AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at Canal Bank Road, 16 SHORT-B.
DOWITCHERS at the Rymer Road ponds, and RED KNOTS at Rock Point Park
and east of Port Colbourne at Pinecrest. At the numerous beach access
roads along the lakeshore - WHITE-R. SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER,
STILT SANDPIPER and SHORT-B. DOWITCHER. Also, FORSTER'S TERN at
Pinecrest, and at Rock Point, LONG-TAILED DUCK, PHILADELPHIA VIREO and
12 warbler species.
In Buffalo, August 20, a rare WILLET, at an unexpected location -
Lisa Pond in Tifft Nature Preserve.
At Niagara Falls Ontario, two TRICOLORED HERONS continue above the
falls, opposite Dufferine Islands Park.
BALD EAGLES this week - 7 at Saint Columbans on Route 5 in the
Chautauqua County Town of Sheridan, plus single BALD EAGLES at Silver
Creek, Cattaraugus Creek and at Woodlawn Beach State Park in Hamburg.
Other reports this week - D.-CREST. CORMORANT at Sinking Ponds in
East Aurora. MERLINS in Porter and two locations on the Niagara
Peninsula. At Amherst State Park, several YELLOW-B. FLYCATCHERS,
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO and 11 warbler species. In a
Williamsville yard, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH. WHIP-POOR-WILLS calling
from the Wainfleet Bog in Ontario, at Highway 3 and Wilson Road. And a
single COMMON NIGHTHAWK over Sheridan and Harlem Road in Amherst.
