I decided to try Van Wagner's beach for a 2nd day in a row, having seen 5
Jaegers (4 Parasitic and 1 very likely Long-tailed chasing a Caspian Tern) on
Saturday, but no Shearwater nor any uncommon gulls.
By the time I arrived this morning (Sunday Sept 3) the wind had died and it was
very quiet! Stuck around for about 2 hours, then I decided to scan Windemere
Basin from the tower at the community centre and saw what I thought was a
spinning shorebird so I headed over and sure enough I found 5 Red-necked
Phalaropes (3 in one group and 2 in another) on the basin. Also here was a
good flock of swallows including 1 Purple Martin, 1 Cliff, 2 Northern
Rough-wings, several Bank and 100+ Barn. Ducks included several Lesser Scaup,
2 Northern Shoveler, 100+ Green-winged Teal, 3 Bufflehead.
Cheers & Good Birding,

DIRECTIONS:
Van Wagner's Beach and the Lakeland Community Centre can be found by exiting
the Niagara-bound QEW at Woodward Ave in Hamilton (just south of the Burlington
Skyway) and turning right, then another right at Beach Blvd, you will see the
tower on the left by the lake.
Windemere Basin is found off Eastport Drive (runs parallel to the Skyway), exit
off the Niagara-bound QEW from the north side of the skyway, turn right at the
sign for “Pier 25”, you will see the basin on the left. Word of caution -
there are “No unauthorized entry” signs there and I'm not sure how strict they
are, but people have birded the area for years.
