I did a quick check of the Holland Landing lagoons this morning and found less
than 100 shorebirds - a marked decline from last Saturday's peak of approx.
500. Most of today's birds were juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs but there were
still 18 Stilt Sandpipers (juveniles going into first basic, I think). I could
not find the American Avocet. The last report I heard of it was from Chris and
Keith Dunn who had it Thursday, as well as a juvenile Merlin chasing peeps and
yellowlegs. There is still a large number of ducks - mostly Green-winged and
Blue-winged Teal - but joining them now are at least 15 Northern Shovelers and
about 50 Wood Ducks, many of which have molted back into alternate plumage.
I did not have an opportunity to check the Schomberg lagoons or the Beeton sod farms. Earlier in the week, though, while cycling near Ballantrae, I had a group of four Ravens noisily fly by. Theo Hoffman believes this group is likely the parents and two offspring of a family that nested in the nearby North Tract (Vivian & 48) this summer. Dear Ontbirders:

As a follow-up, or continuation, of others' emails, the Willet was at Rattray Marsh as of 11:15 this morning . Also seen, among many species of shorebirds, was a juvenile Stilt Sandpiper.

The woods around the boardwalk were very active, with at least 10 species of warblers.

Good birding

John Carley

  DIRECTIONS copied from Mark Cranford

Rattray Marsh is in Mississauga. From the QEW exit at Southdown Road, travel south to Lakeshore Road (old Highway 2). Turn left (east) and drive through Clarkson Village. Turn right (south) on Bexhill Road (just past the 5th or 6th stop light east of Southdown). Park at the bottom of the street near a laneway access to Rathway . At the bottom of the hill follow the boardwalk east( LEFT) to the lake then walk the shore west to the outlet.
