A group of us were birding in Constance Bay (west of Ottawa) this morning and found several good birds for the area. Highlights were Whimbrel, Caspian Tern, and Baird's Sandpiper.
To get to Constance Bay, take the March Road exit off Highway 417 (in Kanata). Follow this to Dunrobin Road. Take Dunrobin Road west past Dunrobin and Woodlawn. Turn right onto Constance Bay Drive. Follow this to the Ottawa River/Constance Bay. Where you reach the river is a good spot to look for the Caspian Tern. Travel ~500 m east of this point along the river and you will find another access point with a good view over the Bay. 4 Pied-billed Grebe and a 1st winter Bald Eagle were also here. Further west along the river is a restaurant (The Point). The Whimbrel was on the beach (at the Point) here. Further west where Buckam's Bay joins the river is an access point where we saw the Baird's Sandpiper (and Semipalmated Plovers, Greater Yellowlegs, and 19 Blue-winged Teal). If you drive straight out of this access point down a woodland road you will come to a clearing. This is where the regularly reported Red-headed Woodpeckers are. We saw 5 today.
