While at Van Wagerns Beach in Hamilton over the noon hour today, myself and several others had looks at Sabine's Gulls and Black-legged Kittiwakes in the strong easterly winds. We had a close in pass of a juvenile Sabine's at about 12:35. Most other views were farther out with a group of four Sabine's ealier before noon by others. Also a close in juvenile Kittiwake just after 12:00, and other more distant views of possibly the same bird. No jaegers yet today.
On Sunday, I along with several others had 2 or 3 Long-tailed Jaegers at Van Wagners Beach shortly after noon. At one point, two immature birds were high overhead of the beach. We also had them farther out chasing a Sabine's Gull. Earlier in the morning, another birder had a juvenile Sabine's Gull fly over the beach and inland. We also had a juvenile Lesser Black-backed Gull in close. (Sorry for the late post on these, but I did not have email access yesterday and hoped others would post.) Directions to Van Wagners Beach: >From the QEW highway coming from the west, take the Woodward Ave exit; turn right at the stoplight at the end of the ramp; turn right at the next lights onto Beach Blvd, go under the QEW, then turn right again at the lights onto Van Wagners Beach Rd. Continue about 1 km to the parking lots near Hutch's Restaurant or the Lakeland Community Centre. >From the QEW coming from the east, take the Hwy 20 exit (Centennial Parkway); go north to the North Service Rd; turn left at the lights; continue east as the road bends right then left and becomes Van Wagners Beach Dr; continue about 1 km to the parking lots near Hutch's Restaurant or the Lakeland Community Centre.
