Wednesday, October 11 - BOS meeting at 7 PM at the Buffalo Museum
of Science. Michael Hamilton and Robert DeLeon will
present results of the 2005 BOS April and May Count,
including comparisons with previous 70 years of count data.
Visitors are always welcome at BOS meetings.

Highlights of reports received September 28 through October 5 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, EARED GREBE,
LONG-B. DOWITCHER, RED-HEADED WDPKR. and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
At the Batavia Waste Water Plant, a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, first
reported September 27, was still present October 1. Also at the plant,
1 or 2 EARED GREBES, 508 NORTHERN SHOVELERS and 269 RUDDY DUCKS, plus
PIED-BILLED GREBE, GREAT EGRET, GREEN HERON, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK,
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, COMMON
MERGANSER, COMMON MOORHEN, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and DUNLIN.
September 30, the BOS field trip to Lakeside Beach State Park, on
the Lake Ontario shore in the Orleans County Town of Carlton, reported
a LONG-B. DOWITCHER, seen and heard flyin along the beach, 3
RED-HEADED WDPKRS. in the oak trees at the restrooms, and out over the
lake, COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, COOPER'S HAWK,
BONAPARTE'S GULL, 3 AMERICAN PIPITS and YELLOW-R. WARBLERS. To the
east of Lakeside, at Point Breeze, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS and a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW.
From the Town of Hamburg, it was reported this week that RED-HEADED
WDPKRS. likely bred at Lakeside Memorial Park. Three adults and 2
juvenile RED-HEADED WDPKRS. were seen through the summer in a yard on
Morgan Parkway, adjoining the memorial park.
Fall migrant RUSTY BLACKBIRDS this week at the Tonawanda Wildlife
Management Area and Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo. Also at Tifft,
11 warbler species on October 2, including ORANGE-CR. WARBLER,
NORTHERN PARULA and PINE WARBLER.
September 29 at Amherst State Park, four wren species - CAROLINA
WREN, HOUSE WREN, WINTER WREN and MARSH WREN. On the 30th, 9 WINTER
WRENS and 17 NORTHERN FLICKERS at Cattaraugus Creek in the Town of
Hanover in Chautauqua County.
From the Town of Aurora, an interesting report of 2 male and a
female EASTERN BLUEBIRD exploring a nest box on October 2.
Other reports this week - at the Countryside Gravel Ponds, on Route
62 in the Town of Dayton, 10 PIED-BILLED GREBES and 20 RUDDY DUCKS.
Along the Pendleton-Wheatfield Townline in Niagara County, a CHUKAR,
certainly an escaped or released game bird. In a Wilson yard, an
unusual ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK with an entirely buffy-yellow plumage. And
widely reported this week - abundant GOLDEN-CR. KINGLETS and RUBY-CR.
KINGLETS, plus YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, GRAY-
CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, WHITE-THR. SPARROW, WHITE-CR.
SPARROW and DARK-EYED JUNCO.
