Highlights of reports received November 2 through November 9 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include EURASIAN WIGEON, HARLEQUIN DUCK
and BLACK-HEADED GULL.
In November, the Niagara River becomes the center of attention for
local and visiting birders. On the 5th, above the falls in Ontario, a
EURASIAN WIGEON along with several L. BLACK-B. GULLS, late TREE
SWALLOWS and one late BARN SWALLOW among the expected N. ROUGH-W.
SWALLOWS, and a BALD EAGLE at the control gates.
A BLACK-LEG. KITTIWAKE continues below the falls. On the lower
river, LITTLE GULL at the whirlpool and at Niagara-on-
the-Lake, Ontario, a PARASITIC JAEGER chasing gulls. At the source
of the river, off Fort Erie, Ontario, abundant BUFFLEHEADS and
LONG-TAILED DUCKS, plus SURF SCOTER, WHITE-
WINGED SCOTER, and BLACK SCOTER. From the New York side, at the
Austin Street marina in Riverside, LITTLE GULL and 2 COMMON TERNS
among 200 BONAPARTE'S GULLS. And, off Grand Island, 28 TUNDRA SWANS at
Beaver Island State Park.
November 4, a HARLEQUIN DUCK landed briefly on Lake Erie at Saint
Columbans in the Town of Sheridan, and a probable BLACK-HEADED GULL at
Dunkirk Harbor. November 6 at Dunkirk Harbor, 2 almost-late FORSTER'S
TERNS.
HORNED GREBES in the Southern Tier this week - 8 at the gravel ponds
on Route 62 in Dayton, 38 at Dunkirk Harbor, 34 at Saint Columbans and
73 at the mouth of Silver Creek. Also at the gravel ponds, 676
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 155 COMMON MERGANSERS and 154 AMERICAN COOTS, plus
COMMON LOON, PIED-
BILLED GREBE, TUNDRA SWAN, AMERICAN WIGEON, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK,
CANVASBACK, REDHEAD, HOODED MERGANSER, RUDDY DUCK and 2 BALD EAGLES.
In the Chautauqua County Town of Pomfret, 51 BUFFLEHEADS on the Van
Buren ponds, and 44 HORNED LARKS with 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS on Farel
Road.
Other reports this week - 45 HOODED MERGANSERS and 2 CAROLINA WRENS
at Times Beach Nature Preserve in Buffalo. A single SNOW GOOSE over
Orchard Park. Over Lake Ontario off Sunset Island in Wilson, 115
migrating DUNLIN. EASTERN PHOEBE lingering at the mouth of Cattaraugus
Creek in Hanover. And a surprise in a yard on Ruie Road in North
Tonawanda - 3 WILD TURKEYS.
