I don't mean to steal anyone's thunder but I wanted to report this possibility
as quickly as possible so others can study this bird and make their own
determinations. Hopefully others will post more details as they become
available.

A group of birders visiting from Vermont found a very interesting gull at
Niagara today. It was a dark-backed 3rd winter bird with bright pink legs.
Careful study by about 15 good birders seemed to have confirmed all of the
salient field marks. The bird was studied, while I was there, for 30-40
minutes and continued after we left. I know that some pictures were taken, but
don't know the quality. The consensus was that it appeared to be a 3rd winter
Slaty-backed Gull.

It was sitting on the rocks just upstream at first along the breakwall where
one was found previously and then from the barge and close to the Canadian
side. It was closely compared to Lesser Black-backed, Great Black-backed and
Herring Gull re size, leg and back colour, underwing colour, etc.

Other birds of interest - Rough-winged Swallow above the falls near the
construction opposite the barge, adult Little Gull below the Falls, Thayer's,
Kumlien's and California Gulls at Adam Beck, Tufted Titmouse in Chippewa, and
of course the Razorbill as previously reported.

On the way home we found all 3 scoters and the Barrow's Golden-eye at Gray's
Road in Stoney Creek.

Sorry, but I have been advised that the founding birders were from Colorado,
not Vermont. Hopefully I got it right this time! Sorry for the confusion.

Spent the day birding in the Ottawa to see if I could get a winter list off to
a good start (and after yesterday's snow and freezing rain it certainly seemed
like winter!)

With the River and larger bodies of water still open, there were still good
numbers of waterfowl around. Highlights included:

- Common Loon (1), Black Scoter (2), White-winged Scoter (8), and Bald Eagle
(2 adults) at Shirley's Bay. Also a Pine Grosbeak flew over the boat launch
parking lot, calling
- the previously reported male Harlequin Duck in the Deschenes Rapids (thanks
to Langis Sirois and Paul Matthews for pointing out this bird)
- late Bonaparte Gulls (4) and Green-winged Teal (4) as well as a female
Canvasback (this species is rare in Ottawa) at the Embrun Sewage Lagoons
- an enormous flock of Snow Geese in the fields east of the St. Albert Sewage
Lagoons. Unfortunately it was flushed by a passing truck and flew off to the
southwest, but I would estimate that it numbered 800 to 1,000 birds - by far
the largest flock I've seen in the Ottawa area (and Ontario for that matter).
All that I could see as they flew were white phase.

The 3rd winter Slaty-backed Gull was seen at the Gatehouse across
from Dufferin Islands upriver of the Engineerium from 1 PM to 2 PM on
12/2/06 sitting on a large flat rock along with about 50 Ring-billed
Gulls and 2 Great Black-backed Gulls, to the delight of a throng of
birders from CayugaBirds, OntBirds, GenesseeBirds and a contingent
from Waterloo ON. I first heard of the bird from Mike Galas who
relayed the information, unfortunately he was unable to get away to
see the bird.
