Good morning,

For those of you who are still interested in looking for this bird, or seeing it again for 2007, the Razorbill at Niagara-on-the-Lake was present at it's usual spot this morning (8:00 a.m., December 31, 2006), opposite Queen's Royal Park (Front St & Regent St.). I received a call from Ken McIlwrick (visiting from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) that he found the bird about three-quarters of the way out in the river mouth, between the fort on the American side and the green buoy further out on Lake Ontario. It was closer to the fort than the green buoy.

Hope everyone has a Happy New Year!

The 63rd Carleton Place CBC took place on Tuesday December 27th. The previous day provided some snow cover and dropped temperatures below freezing, but the large body of water in the circle, Mississippi Lake, was wide open (except in sheltered bays) which was unprecedented. There were 44 species (average) and 6615 birds (above average) seen by 27 field observers and 38 feeder operators.

There were no new species, but record highs of:
Canada Goose 395 (previous high 318)
   Common Goldeneye 82 (64)
   Common Merganser 291 (34)
   Bald Eagle 4 (2)
   Downy Woodpecker 106 (101)

There were tied highs of:
   Great Blue Heron 1
   Cooper's Hawk 3
   Red-tailed Hawk 21
   White-breasted Nuthatch 139
   Carolina Wren 1

Lingering summer birds included Belted Kingfisher, American Robin, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle and Brown-headed Cowbird.

Winter finch numbers were low.
