THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 7:00 pm, SUNDAY JANUARY 7, 2007

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Several good birds were reported this week. The northern reaches of the
Ottawa-Gatineau 50km circle were very productive today, January 7th. A
NORTHERN HAWK OWL click all has been present off Chemin McDonald
west of Brennan's Hill, Quebec, since at least December 31st and was seen again today,
actively flying between trees in the farm fields along Ch. Legault off
McDonald. This bird has also been seen at Ch. Murray and Ch. Neely off
McDonald. A female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was also in this area today, at
the intersection of Ch. Neely and Ch. de Fieldville, and other species in the
same general area included Bald Eagle, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Purple Finch,
singing White-winged Crossbills, and small numbers of Pine Siskins.

The most recent report of the male Barrow's Goldeneye on the Rideau River
between the Rideau Tennis Club and the Hwy 417 overpass was on January 1st,
and several late duck species continued to take advantage of the wide open
water on the Ottawa River between Britannia and Shirley's Bay on the 4th &
5th, including small numbers of Ring-necked Duck, Greater and Lesser Scaup,
Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead and Red-breasted Merganser. The latest ever
report of a Double-crested Cormorant on the Ottawa River came from the 5th,
and a late Great Blue Heron was feeding along March Rd. near Klondike Rd.
the same day. A pair of adult Bald Eagles continue to be seen at Shirley's
Bay from the boat launch as well as March Valley & Riddell Rds. as of the
7th., a late migrant adult Golden Eagle flew south over the Ottawa River
near downtown during strong northwest winds on the 4th, and an adult
Peregrine Falcon was harassing Rock Pigeons at the intersection of Carling
Ave and Booth St. on the 2nd.

Unprecedented numbers of gulls for this time of year included, among the
multiple 100's of Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls, over 175 Ring-billed
Gulls, a 1st-winter Thayer's, 11 Iceland, 27 Glaucous, and 2 Lesser
Black-backed Gulls on the Ottawa River between Britannia and Shirley's Bay
on the 4th. Back on the 1st, 1 Iceland and 2 Glaucous Gulls were at the
large quarry pond on Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd.

A female RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was still visiting the suet feeder at #47
Evergreen Dr. in Bells Corners as of the 3rd (again, there is no need to
enter the property to view the feeders in the backyard), and another
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was reported from #146 Monty Dr. in Constance Bay
on the 4th. Northern Shrikes continue to be reported from various locations,
and another Carolina Wren returned to a property on Burland St. by Britannia
Bay on the 31st. Aside from the birds previously mentioned in Quebec, the
only noteworthy local passerine was the adult White-crowned Sparrow at the
Hilda Rd. feeders by Shirley's Bay, and from father afield at Cooper Marsh
near Lancaster, Ontario, an extremely late American Pipit was seen walking
about on the ice in the marsh on New Year's Day.

Thank you - Good Birding!
