Beautiful day in Thickson's Woods on Sunday... great little spot. My son, his friend and I observed the Great Horned Owl I've read about (quite a sight), a small flock of trumpeter swans, a brown creeper and many of the usual suspects... woodpeckers, goldfinches, chickadees, house finches, bufflehead and goldeneye (on the lake). Here's the link for directions and info on Thickson's Woods.

At almost exactly 5:15 pm, but only lasting till 5:30 pm, many harriers make one last flight over the field, feeding. As they capture a vole or mouse or whatever, they stay on the ground. Some appear to arrive from other locations nearby. As many as 28 Northern Harriers have been seen over the field during this brief time period. They appear to roost in the field. At almost exactly 5:30, just as the last of the harriers sits, at least one short-eared owl, and as many as three, comes out over the same field. Never have I seen such a frenzy of harriers. I will make at least one more trip, in the early morning perhaps to see what happens when these raptors awake. Again, feel free to let me know of your totals for the field. And if you check in the am, let me know how that goes as to times of activity and number of birds involved. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Pete and Sue Read. Directions. Glencoe is southwest of London, between London and Chatham. Closest exit to the 401 is exit 137, from where you would go north along highway 76 to Longwoods Rd.(road 2), then east to Highway 80 and then north to Glencoe. >From Glencoe, go north on highway 80(Dundonald Rd). Take the sixth road on the left, called Shields Siding Drive, to the west. You will find the main field when you get to the first corner, Old Airport Road. The harriers have appeared in the northeast field at the intersection, which is a pastured red clover field, and soya bean field to the east and fields to the south. Mainly they fly over the red clover field at the time mentioned above. At any one time during the day, approximately 10 harriers are seen out along the fields bordering the roads there.
