Photographed what to me was a very pretty but unusual bird yesterday about
3:30pm at the Narrows on Big Rideau Lake. Thanks to Tony Beck of Ottawa for
identifying the bird as a Pied-billed Grebe in winter plumage.

Directions from Smiths Falls: Hwy 15 south about 25 km to from Smiths Falls,
turn right at Hwy 42 to Newboro and turn almost immediately right onto
County Road 14 (this turn is about 100 ft from Hwy 15 but can be easy to
miss). Continue north on CR 14 to the first bridge at the Narrows on Big
Rideau Lake. The bird was in the open water on the right hand (east) side
of the road/bridge. It lingered at the edge of the ice between dives. We
saw it at about 3:30 pm yesterday.
