Spring Birders,
A major influx of sparrows was evident in the Rondeau area this morning.
Most were Song Sparrows, but a Le Conte's Sparrow at McGeachy Pond, Erieau
was exceptional. I had just looked at an Eastern Phoebe, which I thought
was excellent for this date, then I focused on some sparrows ahead. A
single sparrow in the shrubbery caught my attention with the obvious orange
facial patterns. With decent looks, it was no doubt a Le Conte's.
Considering the date, I suppose it could have wintered not far away. Time
was about 11:30.
Also at McGeachy was a Northern Mockingbird, not unusual, since they nest
down the road.
At Erieau, a Horned Grebe was near the fish tugs. A Red-necked Grebe was
there the last couple of days, but I could not locate it this morning. A
pair of Wood Ducks near the channel was new for the year.
At Rondeau P.P. where I started the day, I noted a large number of Song
Sparrows. There must have been a hundred from the Park Store down to south
point trail, Lakeshore Rd. As well, some early Fox Sparrows had come in. I
saw 6 or 7 in the park. A Yellow-rumped Warbler (wintering) was at the
south end of the campground.
Among the usual spring migrants for this time of year were a couple of
Sandhill Cranes flying over the park, and a meadowlark near the Park Store.
Directions to Erieau: The port of Erieau is located south of Blenheim.
West out of Blenheim on Talbot Trail (Rd. 3), turn left onto (Erieau Rd.)
Rd. 12 and follow to village. Just before the village is McGeachy Pond on
the right. The pier area is found by continuing through
the village and turning right at the restaurant intersection.
The Le Conte's Sparrow was along the dyke at McGeachy closer to the far end
towards Erie Beach.
